In other words: early and middle childhood is the best time for learning self-regulation of emotions and how to manage conflict with ones self, others, and the environment. Learning to deal with anger, stress, and fear to help us reach desired outcomes and meet our needs. It’s also means it’s a good time to develop the ability for self control and not responding to every impulse that comes with having a body and a brain.
I wonder if developing the ability to turn down unhealthy habits, resist buying meanginless garbage, and feeding the ego with mindless experiences should be priority number one in childhood. Sometimes it feels like I’m constantly dismantling shitty programs from my head. Passing on unhealthy foods and material items as often as possible. Everyone is trying to pimp me out to their products. I constantly have to monitor the amount of time spent wasted. Sometimes I feel like my mind gets hijacked by my phone and I’ve spent 2 hours looking at someone’s else’s life being “fufilled”. Eating healthy, being active, learning new things, and facing fears should be the rule. Now, we’re just in damage control. Undoing the work of greedy industries that influence our environments daily. Continuing cycles of bad relationships because we haven’t been taught how to express our emotions or foster empathy and understanding.
What can you do to develop some sort of self- regulation in an area that needs improvement? Maybe turn off the t.v/phone. and read something that will benefit you emotionally. Move your body. Develop positive social environments. Learn. Do it! No matter how uncomfortable it’s makes you.
